Whatcom County is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Within minutes there are countless possibilities of things to see and do. Hiking and Bicycling trails cover the landscape ranging from the challenging to the easy and scenic. Take a guided Kayak tour, or spend time paddling around on your own. Whatcom County truly has tons to experience and explore.

In 1996 Bellingham was inducted into the “Trail Town USA” hall of fame by the American Hiking Society and the National Park Service. Whether you’re looking for a challenging day hike, or a leisurely sunset stroll, Whatcom County has what you’re looking for. The trails are famous for combining cool forested trails with salt and fresh water views. Take a deep breath of clean Whatcom air, and let your feet do the rest!

Bicycling

Bicycling in Whatcom County is more than just an enjoyable pastime. Many people choose bikes as their main form of transportation! Many of the hiking trails are also bicycle friendly, and there are great long stretches of roads for longer trips. There are many active clubs who schedule tours and trips throughout Whatcom County, and are always looking for new members!

Fishing & Swimming

With water everywhere, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of places to spend an afternoon fishing or swimming. Head to Lake Padden for a refreshing dip, or while away the hours catching Rainbow Trout at Silver Lake. Spend the morning in Blaine clamming or crabbing, or take a sunset paddle beside a friendly seal. With so many options, you’ll never run out of ideas.

Kayaking

Kayaking is the perfect way to explore the shorelines of Whatcom County. Discover coastal bays and the near by San Juan Islands. You can either head out with a friend, or check out one of the local tour companies for a day or overnight excursion. The Parks Department has an outstanding program for beginning and intermediate Kayakers.

Boating

You’ll find Marinas in plentiful supply throughout Whatcom County. Go sailing on Bellingham Bay, or go Water skiing on Lake Whatcom. Plenty of homes and communities provide boat slips to their members. Spending time on your boat has never been so beautiful, or easy!

Whale Watching

The Pacific Northwest and the San Juan Islands are home to many Orca Whales. As the largest members of the dolphin family, they live and travel in pods. Overall, there are over 80 Orcas “summering” in the islands. There are several whale watching excursion companies that can take you to see these majestic animals in their native habitat. Spend a half or full day witnessing the playful creatures antics.

Skiing

Mount Baker provides skiers and snow boarders with the longest season,(November – April) the earliest snow in the state, and the most snow (average 595 inches/year) in North America. Mt. Baker has a vertical drop of 1,500 feet with eight chair lights and one tow-rope. Bundle up and don’t forget your gloves!

With 17 private and public golf courses, Whatcom County has the highest concentration of golf courses in Washington State.

Bellingham and Whatcom County are known for their numerous parks. With two public parks systems, there are plenty to go around. From a peaceful walk through the trees, to playing Frisbee with friends, there is a park for everyone.

While Whatcom county is known for it’s beautiful landscape, it is also known for it’s abundance of beautiful art. Wherever you go local artwork is always a focal point. Visit Western Washington University’s outdoor sculpture garden, attend a music festival, or learn some of the local History at one of the many museums. You’ll be surprised at what all you can find.
